With origins dating back to the hydraulis in Ancient Greece (3rd Century BC), it is incredible to think the pipe organ remained the most complex human-made device right up until the arrival of the telephone exchange in the 19th century. To this day, it is impossible for anyone lucky enough (or silly enough, if it happens to be making noise at the time) to be shown the belly of an organ not to be utterly awe-inspired by the complexity, internal beauty and sheer volume of its sound.
